răbda

Romanian

Etymology

Probably from an earlier *arăbdare, from a Vulgar Latin *ēlib(ī)dāre (to force oneself not to desire), from Latin ē in privative sense + libīdō, with a later apheresis of the initial a-, cf. Aromanian aravdu, arãvdari.

Another theory is that it derives from a Vulgar Latin root *reemendāre, from Latin emendāre (through an intermediate early Romanian form *remda → *rembda). Yet another derives it from Latin rīgidāre. Other more improbable theories derive it from Slavic root raditi ("take care of"), Latin root reobdurāre, a derivative of Latin regere, Latin rabidāre, Latin repedāre, or Latin *rubidāre (to rage).
