From s- +‎ cantari (“to let out a sudden sound due to a fright”; “yell”) or, otherwise, through Vulgar Latin, from earlier Latin excanto.
From the (irregular) dissimilation of *spantari, likely from the same stratum of Catalan, Occitan, Portuguese, and Spanish espantar, from earlier Vulgar Latin *expaventāre. Compare also the other languages belonging to the same dialect continuum, Italian spaventare, (Occitan and Catalan espaventar), and French épouvanter. Cf. in any case also appagnari (“to be frightened, to panic”) and spagnari (“to frighten, to scare”).
