From Old English scȳne, scēone (“beautiful, fair, bright”), from Proto-Germanic *skauniz, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱoun- (“quick, dashing, beautiful”). Compare Middle Dutch scone (“beautiful, bright”), Dutch schoon (“beautiful”), German schön (“beautiful”).
