From the verb smiet (“to laugh”) (q.v.), of which it was originally the iterative form (cf. skriet (“to run”), skraidīt (“to run around, several times”)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mey-.^[1]

1. to smile (to produce a smile, a facial expression with the ends of one's mouth raised and the teeth shown, in order to express happiness, cheerfulness, kindness, satisfaction, or pleasure)

   sirsnīgi smaidīt ― to smile sincerely, warmly
