Etymology
From a family of Lithuanian words including smalsùs (“curious”) and smailùs (“lustful, given to savoring tasty foods”),[1] of unclear origin.[2] That said, note semantic similarities with Proto-Indo-European *(s)mey- (“to smile, be glad”).
