spalgums m (1st declension)

1. (of sounds) shrillness, reediness (the quality of that which is shrill, reedy, sharp, piercing, high-pitched)

   zvana spalgums ― the shrillness of the (door)bell

   balss spalgums ― the shrillness of the voice

2. (of pain) acuteness, sharpness

   karsta sāpe izplūda audos... augot spalgumā, skaudrumā, asumā ― a hot pain flooded into (his) tissues... growing in acuteness and sharpness

3. (of weather) piercing cold

   sals neatvilga, bet vēl pieņēmās spalgumā ― the frost did not weaken, its piercing cold increased (instead)
