Etymology
Probably from Middle Low German spölen, from Old Saxon spōlian, from Proto-West Germanic *spōlijan.
Compare the older byform spöla. The back vowel could stem from Low German past forms with Rückumlaut. Alternatively it could be from Middle Dutch influence. Cognate with Danish spule, Norwegian Bokmål spyle, Norwegian Nynorsk spyla, and further Dutch spoelen, German spülen.
