sterf

Afrikaans

Etymology

From Dutch sterven, from Middle Dutch sterven, from Old Dutch stervan, from Proto-Germanic *sterbaną.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /stɛrf/
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

sterf (present sterf, present participle sterwende, past participle gesterf or (adjectivally) gestorwe)

  1. to die
    Synonyms: doodgaan, oorly

Usage notes

  • The adjectival past participle may also be used to form the perfect tense: hy is gister gestorwe (he died yesterday), but this is now highly archaic. The only usual phrase in contemporary Afrikaans is regular hy het gister gesterf. See oorly, however, for which the older construction remains in common use.
