From a Proto-Germanic root similar to *stadiz and *stainaz, both ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand”).
Cognate of Middle Low German stīde, Old Frisian stīth, Old English stīþ, English stith (“strong; stiff; rigid”), Old Norse stinnr, Danish stind, Swedish stinn.
