Via some other European language, ultimately from Latin studium (“study”). The meaning of "artistic workshop" was apparently first attested in Italian (see studiolo).

3. studio (a group of artists, typically in the performing arts, characterized by some new, often experimental, form of creative activity)
4. study, sketch (a preliminary work showing the possibilities of a given idea)

   paskatījos Miesnieka “Zāģera” studijā, kuras reprodukcija jau vairāk nekā gadu karājās pie sienas ― I looked at Miesnieks' study of “The Sawyer,” a reproduction of which had been hanging on the wall for over a year

5. studio (a place designed for recording sounds, music, or for making moving pictures, television broadcasts, etc.)

   mākslas filmu studija ― artistic film studio

   firmas “Melodija” skaņu ierakstu studija parasti mani sastindzina: vēsi mikrofoni un pultis, nav klausītāju ― the sound recording studio of the firm “Melodija” constrains me: it is cold microphones and controls, there are no listeners (= people)

   mums palikusi tikai viena “B” studija, no kuras pārraidām melnbalto programmu ― we kept only one “B” studio, from which black-and-white programs were broadcast
