Etymology

From a regionally attested sund (supervision, seizure, capture, reign, protection). Borrowed from a South Slavic language, compare Old Church Slavonic сѫдъ (sǫdŭ) ("trial, court") and Serbo-Croatian suditi; ultimately from Proto-Slavic *sǫdi (judge). Doublet of sodit.[1]
