Despite an unusual suffix, apparently from Proto-Indo-European *terh₁- (to rub, rub by twisting, twist, turn), thereby cognate with Ancient Greek τερηδών (terēdṓn, woodworm) and possibly Lithuanian trandẽ (maggot).
