  1. Any of various large birds of prey, now extinct, living in North and South America, of the family Teratornithidae.
    • 2012, Caspar Henderson, The Book of Barely Imagined Beings, Granta Books, published 2013, page 249:
      Long before man, there were birds even larger than this. The biggest found so far in the fossil record are the teratorns.
