tyrihjelm

Alternative forms

Etymology

By surface analysis, from tyri (fatwood) +‎ hjelm (helmet). There are used dialectal forms of this word starting with fur- and tørr- (lit. "dry"), so it is not clear what was the original form,[1] although *torehjelm ("thunder helmet") is possible if compared to Swedish stormhatt probably of German origin. Today, however, the form starting with tyri- is more common.

The dialectal endings like -alm are probably influenced by alm (elm).
