Inherited from Middle Welsh tywyssawc, from Old Welsh *touyssauc (attested in plural touyssocion), from Proto-Brythonic *towɨssọg, from Proto-Celtic *towissākos (leader), synchronically tywys (to lead) +‎ -og (one who does something). Cognate with Irish taoiseach.
