Etymology

Inherited from Latin ūber, from Proto-Italic *ouðer, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ówHdʰr̥ (udder). The change of the Latin consonant -b- to Romanian -g- is also witnessed in rug, neg, etc. In this case, it may also have been influenced by suge (to suck). The regional variant may have been influenced by mulge (to milk).
