verkoop
Dutch
Pronunciation
Audio: (file) - IPA(key): /vərˈkoːp/, [ˈvɛr-] (contrastive, with stress on first syllable, somewhat common in the Netherlands)
- Hyphenation: ver‧koop
Etymology 1
Deverbal from verkopen.
Noun
verkoop m (plural verkopen)
- sale (exchange of goods)
- De verkoop van het nieuwe product overtrof alle verwachtingen. ― The sale of the new product exceeded all expectations.
Usage notes
- The first syllable may be stressed occasionally, particularly in the Netherlands, due to the influence of other similar nouns with stressed prefixes (inkoop, aankoop). This is uncommon in Belgium, and contrast other deverbals from words prefixed with ver- such as verloop, verderf. The same effect applies to the verb verkopen.
