From Proto-Vietic *ʔa-pɔːt, from Proto-Austroasiatic *poːtˀ ~ *pɔːtˀ (“to rub, to stroke”). Cognate with Arem apùət, Riang puət¹, Khasi syrpud (“to rub gently”), Mon ဗဗတ် (həpòt, “to rub”), Khmer ពួត (puət, “to rub”), Khmu [Cuang] rmpɔːt.
