Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Tupi-Guarani *ɨβa-k (“sky”), from Proto-Tupian *ɨpʷa- (“high”).[1] Doublet of ybaté. The sense of heaven is a semantic loan from Portuguese céu.

Cognate with Guaraní yvága.
