• The sense "first" is only used in compound numerals or in dates (to refer to the first month, i.e. January); the latter use is more often ensimmäinen (or simply the name of the month), but both are accepted.
• Interchangeable with ensimmäinen (“first”) at the end of an ordinal, i.e. when indicating ones (except with 11th); ensimmäinen is currently more commonly used.
• Not used in front of sadas (“hundredth”), tuhannes (“thousandth”) etc.
