ysgithr

Welsh

Alternative forms

  • ysgythr

Etymology

Uncertain. Viredaz tentatively derives the word from a Proto-Celtic *skixtro-, from *skrixtro-, from Proto-Indo-European *skr̥̮p-tro-, from the zero-grade of *(s)kerp- (to cut, harvest) (with s-mobile) + *-trom (instrumental suffix). However, *(s)kerp- is otherwise absent in Celtic, in addition to all other derivatives lacking the s-mobile.[1]
