Du vieil anglais hwæte[1], apparenté à white (« blanc »), cette céréale étant perçue comme de couleur claire ; voir en français la métaphore blond comme les blés.
Apparenté à l’islandais hveiti (« froment »), au danois hvede (« froment »), au norvégien hvete (« froment »), au néerlandais weit (« froment »), à l’allemand Weizen (« froment »).
