Usage

The =* tag can be used to classify the type of a landslide tagged with natural=landslide or geological=landslide. Only values that have been surveyed or can be verified through reliable sources should be applied. If the geological nature of a landslide cannot be definitively determined, the =* tag should not be used.

Values

Although the =* tag is in use, the previously used values are a mix of useful and questionable values.

The following values are clear and useful:

=debris_slide
=rock_fall
=mud_slide
=earthflow

Suggested values

The currently useful values of the =* tag fit well with the Hungr-Leroueil-Picarelli classification of landslides described in Wikipedia. Additional values of the =* tag could be derived from this classification based on the type of movement and the material involved. Where the exact nature of the landslide is not available but there is partial information about the landslide, a more generic tag could be applied.

For explanations of the types of movement in landslides, see the Landslide Types and Processes page published by USGS.
