This key is a refinement of place=region indicating the type of region. Adding =* might be necessary as place=region does not define the type of region it refers. It could refer to an administrative area or a geographic area.

95% of instances of this key have the value mountain_area, mostly used in Central Europe and Libya. The other values used more than once are natural_area and mountain_range.

A more common tagging method for mountain ranges is to use the tag natural=mountain_range.
