Low-traffic neighbourhoods

Low-traffic neighborhoods are not mapped explicitly in OpenStreetMap as it is quite subjective.

But anything specific can be mapped, in particular:

  • legal rules such as speed limits - with maxspeed=*
  • access restrictions using access=*, vehicle=*, bicycle=*, foot=*, motor_vehicle=* and other access tags
  • highway=living_street is used for special streets where pedestrians have legal right of way and priority over vehicles
  • highway=pedestrian is for streets where vehicle traffic is completely eliminated or extremely restricted
  • barrier=* is used for variety of barriers
    • barrier=bollard for bollards
    • barrier=planter for structures containing plants that allow pedestrians, wheelchairs and bikes through but not cars (these are common in experimental or trial schemes, see image here for an example)

  • traffic_calming=* for variety of devices to reduce speed of vehicles
    • traffic_calming=bump A short bump, with extent, in the direction of travel, of about 30 cm or shorter.
    • traffic_calming=hump Similar to a bump, but longer in direction of travel, with total length of usually 2–4 meters, generally with a continuously rounded shape.
    • traffic_calming=table A speed table used for encouraging traffic to drive slower. More gradual than speed humps and speed bumps.
    • traffic_calming=island An island is a small area that temporarily separates two different directions of traffic.
