A waste basket is a single small container for depositing garbage that is easily accessible for pedestrians.
It can also be called a rubbish bin, litter bin, trash can, or garbage can.
How to map
Place a node
at the location of the bin, and add the tag amenity= to it. Since they're so small, it's unlikely a waste basket would be represented as an area.
Useful combinations
waste=*to specify the kind of waste the bin is intended for. Useful for specific waste collectors like old drugs.waste=cigarettesIf it's a bin for the disposal of cigarettes and their ash only (ashtray).material=plastic/metal/..describes the material which the waste basket is made ofcolour=green/black/..describes the color of the waste basketindoor=yes/nocovered=yes/noref=*used if the waste basket has an reference code or numbermanufacturer=*used if the waste basket manufacturer can be determinedsupport=pole/ground/..describes how the waste basket is supporteddrive_through=yesto indicate waste baskets where trash can be thrown in from a vehicle (car, bicycle). These are fairly widespread in the Netherlands and are known as blikvangers. Denmark seems to have a similar concept; other countries unknown.
