This tag can be used for all kinds of inscriptions to map the inscription itself. It can be particularly useful in case of big objects, where it allows to store the exact position (and eventually size, if you do not represent it as a node) of an inscription, for example in case of a building or wall. In case of small objects or if the whole object contains the inscription (e.g. a memorial plaque), you would not use this tag but rather add the tag inscription=* on the object itself. The tag can also be useful to distinguish several inscriptions on the same object.

Subtypes

To specify the subtype of the epigraph, the following tags are proposed: This list is in a very early stage and might get completely restructured, use at your own peril

  • epigraph=building_construction for inscriptions on buildings referring to their construction or reconstruction, including names of builders and craftsmen, craftmen signs, dates
  • epigraph=person for inscriptions referring to a person (e.g. a commissioner, building owner)
  • epigraph=graffiti for historic graffiti
  • epigraph=advertising for historic advertising signs, including shop signs, restaurant signs, company name signs etc.
  • epigraph=welcome for historic welcome signs, e. g. at building entrances
  • epigraph=slogan for historic inscriptions of slogans

Rendering

Currently not rendered on OSM Carto or any other renderers. You might want to add tourism=attraction for those epigraphs that potentially draw significant attention to make sure they appear on maps.
