This tag can be used for all kinds of inscriptions to map the inscription itself. It can be particularly useful in case of big objects, where it allows to store the exact position (and eventually size, if you do not represent it as a node) of an inscription, for example in case of a building or wall. In case of small objects or if the whole object contains the inscription (e.g. a memorial plaque), you would not use this tag but rather add the tag inscription=* on the object itself. The tag can also be useful to distinguish several inscriptions on the same object.
Tagging
Generally
historic=inscription=*the text content of the epigraphinscription:url=*a url pointing to the inscriptionurl=*a url related to the epigraph
In case of inscriptions made by a specific culture, you should also consider to add:
If you want, you can add tags to specify the size and location:
height=*the height of the inscription that is representedwidth=*the width of the inscription that is representedlocation=*the location of the inscription, especially on the vertical axis:location=wallfor inscriptions on the walllocation=rooffor inscriptions located on the rooflocation=surfacefor inscriptions on the ground level, e. g. on the doorsteplocation=overheadfor overhead inscriptions above entranceslocation=pedimentfor inscriptions within the pedimentlocation=keystonefor inscriptions on the keystone
Subtypes
To specify the subtype of the epigraph, the following tags are proposed: This list is in a very early stage and might get completely restructured, use at your own peril
epigraph=building_constructionfor inscriptions on buildings referring to their construction or reconstruction, including names of builders and craftsmen, craftmen signs, datesepigraph=personfor inscriptions referring to a person (e.g. a commissioner, building owner)epigraph=graffitifor historic graffitiepigraph=advertisingfor historic advertising signs, including shop signs, restaurant signs, company name signs etc.epigraph=welcomefor historic welcome signs, e. g. at building entrancesepigraph=sloganfor historic inscriptions of slogans
Rendering
Currently not rendered on OSM Carto or any other renderers. You might want to add tourism=attraction for those epigraphs that potentially draw significant attention to make sure they appear on maps.
