The tag water= is used in combination with natural=water to map individual rapids as areas. A rapid is a fast-flowing, often turbulent section of a watercourse such as a river, often containing exposed rocks or boulders.
Smaller rapids can be drawn with waterway=rapids as a nodes or ways across the direction of flow.
The degree of difficulty of a river section waterway=river can be tagged with rapids=yes/no/1 2 3 4 5 6.
Background
For boat safety, all rapids should be mapped as attributes of waterways using the rapids=* tag. However, additionally mapping rapids as separate features can help with use cases like rendering and geocoding.
How to map
Draw a closed way around the area of river containing the rapids and tag as natural=water + water=. Different rapid areas should not overlap with each other.
