  • King William the Lion of Scotland is defeated by the English at the Battle of Alnwick, and is forced by King Henry II to sign a treaty whereby all Scotland pays homage to the English king.[1]
  • Bernard de Clairvaux, an important theological teacher and author of the rule of the Knight Templars, is declared a saint by Alexander III.[2]
