- Galileo publishes his Dialogues on the subject of a heliocentric solar system. The Church charges him with heresy and forces him to recant, then puts him under house arrest.[1]
- Hong Taiji, the self-proclaimed first Qing emperor of China, recruits Han Chinese bureaucrats who oppose the Ming Dynastic to his cause. He arranges for them to marry Manchu and Mongol women to help bridge the culture gap between the Qing and their future subjects.[2]

- July 1: The Siege of Nuremberg begins. It will be one of the most vicious sieges in the entire war.[3]
- September 1: After having besieged Nuremberg for months, the imperial General Wallenstein and the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus finally clash. The battle results in Wallenstein's victory and forces Gustavus to flee.[3]
