  • 1618-1648: The Thirty Years War begins within the Holy Roman Empire due to conflicts between Catholic and Protestant Imperial Estates. The conflict soon engulfs other European nations, like Sweden, France and Spain.[1]
    • The Peace of Westphalia ends the Thirty Years War.[2] As a consequence, the Netherlands gains independence from Spain.[3]
