  • The survivors of a small Spanish village raided by Napoleon's men mourn and bury the dead. Mercedes Gonzaga de Ortiz finds her youngest son under the body of an officer and watches him die. An old man helps her begin the last rites, and suddenly she sees an angel merged with her, its hands as bloody as her own.[1][2]
