  • After Napoleon is defeated at the Battle of Leipzig, the Congress of Vienna seeks to restore order in Europe. The former territories of the Holy Roman Empire are reorganized into the German Confederation, which will act as a buffer between Prussia and Austria.[1]
  • The Bourbon Restoration: Louis XVIII, brother of the executed king, takes the French throne.[2]

April

  • Mount Tambora in the West Indies erupts, throwing enough ash into the upper atmosphere to affect the global climate, leading to unusually cold weather around the world. Crops fail, livestock die, and disease runs rampant.[3]
