Ed Miller was a photographer in the Los Angeles area, hired by reclusive billionaire Howard Barclay to photograph a séance on November 16, 2019. Something went wrong at the séance, and Ed died.
Ed was a photographer whose photographic skills often had him capturing otherworldly images. Ed thought they were nothing special, but Howard Barclay identified those photos as capturing images of something beyond the Shroud. This may be because of Ed's camera, passed down from his father. It was never used on shoots, but Ed always brought it with him regardless.
Barclay bought all of Ed's photos via Tom Shepard, a gallery owner who was showcasing Ed's work. There was some sort of disagreement with Barclay, and Ed ended up getting paid substantially less than the photos were worth, with Tom getting the lion's share of the funds.
Ed's wife Rachel became increasingly frustrated with sacrificing herself for his work, with little return on investment.
Due to his supposed otherworldly talent, Ed was invited to the Barclay Mansion in November 2019 to photograph a séance held by Meadow Walters. Ed took the job for the money.
The fake séance ended up being all too real, and Ed was possessed by a vengeful ghost, and then killed Walters and Barclay, and then the rest of the séance attendees as they ran through the house, before finally stabbing himself.
Wraith

Ed woke up (albeit dead) in the Shadowlands, trapped within the Barclay Mansion and unable to leave. He was guided by his Shadow to witness Remnants, memory echoes of the events of the past, and using those Remnants to discover why they were trapped, and then to find his wife who had escaped to the vault in the basement, before finally revealing that the whole event was orchestrated to destroy Ed. The séance was years ago, so everyone who may have survived was dead, and his wife hadn't even been present during the séance: she had left Ed weeks beforehand, but the Shadow had presented Ed with false Remnants to confuse him.

A final Rachel Remnant, possibly a manifestation of Ed's Eidolon, guided him to destroy the fetters belonging to The Broken Woman, the Spectre keeping Ed bound to the Mansion.
After doing so, the Shadow appears outside the mansion to taunt Ed and inform him that he's been trapped in a Harrowing this whole time, and will be trapped there in an endless loop until he falls to Oblivion. Then he disappears.
If the player fails to achieves 100% completion, Ed is suddenly confronted by a horrifying vision of the Broken Woman, and then the loop begins anew.
If the player achieves 100%, Ed meets Cassandra at the gate, she thanks him, and Ed breaks out of the loop.
