Heinrich Mangels

Heinrich Mangels is a member of the Aesculapian Order involved in the Huang-Marr Biorg Project. He was secretly transferred to the Organ Banks to conceal his role in that conspiracy, but inadvertantly stumbled upon a different one.

Mangels' life-long fascination with Aberrants and taint lead him to pursue medicine, but his terrible bedside manner kept him in research and development roles. His ambition and arrogance made him ideal for the Huang-Marr project, and he came to truly believe it was in the best interest of all humankind and the only way to combat the Aberrant threat.[1] After the incidents in Freak Alley and Cantor Station threatened to expose the project, Mangels assisted in efforts to cover up both incidents. He personally met with and brainwashed ISRAn Grenada Connor to conceal the fact that Jerzy Grabowski interfered with her warning about the Aberrant attack on Cantor Station.[2]

Mangels was transferred to the Organ Banks at the Aesculapians' Montressor Clinic as part of the Huang-Marr cover-up.[3] Upon arriving back Earthside, he was assigned to the Organ Banks under the name "Reinhardt Tuten" to obscure his trail. "Minerva," the mastermind behind the biorg project, planned to have Mangels "accidentally" killed, but Mangels had made copies of key documents related to the project and claimed they would be automatically distributed to Warren Shaw, Cori Heisler and Solveig Larssen upon his death. Minerva was forced to leave Mangels in place for the time being.[4]

In the Organ Banks, "Tuten" was widely despised by his coworkers for his superior attitude and snitching behavior. He was outraged at the sloppy protocols and poorly-kept records, which doubtlessly lead to many mismatched organs going out, but his attempts to lobby for an audit were shut down by Minerva to maintain his cover. In truth, the lack of documentation was deliberate: European crime syndicates were feeding bodies to the Organ Banks to cover up murders.[5] The cover-up helped Mangels realize that Minerva was Gustaf Beitz.[6]

When Ross showed up in Basel looking for revenge, Mangels took shelter in the maze of steam tunnels below the Montressor Clinic, which clinic staff referred to as "Knossos." Ross caught up to him, however, and killed in him revenge for what Mangels had done to him.[7]
