Magicians of the Bay

Magicians of the Bay (or MotB, pronounced "mot-bee") are one of the major competitors of Black Dog Game Factory. Based out of Renton, Washington, they're best known for their "Buy More Sorcery" card game.[1][2]

They also acquired LSD, Inc., and thus the granddaddy of all RPGs, Labyrinths & Lamiae.[3]

Just after the turn of the century, MotB concocted a scheme known as Obligatory Icosahedron Licensing, or simply OIL, which allowed third-party companies to make games compatible with the latest edition of Labyrinths & Lamiae. One of the companies which jumped on board was Death Lord Games, operating under Black Dog's Axes & Arcana label. [4]

After a few years, MotB revealed a hidden clause, meant to wipe out any competition: any publisher who used the OIL license owed MotB 90% of their profits in one lump sum, effective immediately, and backdated to the release of the original L&L Boiled Leather rulebook from 1971. Most companies promptly declared bankruptcy.[5]
