Having seen encounters with spirits in the case of a possession of a young girl, Edwards has come to believe that said spirits are demons, and that the Shadow is hell.[1] That possession, which he ultimately failed to exorcize, colors his view of faith and of his congregation. Now, he keeps a watchful eye over all of his flock, regularly violating their privacy to get a view of their sins.[2] Those whom he sees as too far gone, too tainted by the demons warping them, he kills.[2]
