Penanggalan (VTR)

Penanggalan (singular penanggal) are a form of non-Kindred vampire that prefers to feed on the blood of pregnant women and babies. This creature is notable for its tendency to travel far afield.

Overview

Hailing from Malaysia, the penanggal hides in plain sight among mortals. When hunting, however, it detaches its head from its body and flies in search of prey, organs trailing after it. Said organs are prehensile; frequently, a penanggal will use its intestines to catch a victim and drag it into eating range.

The bite of these creatures inflicts a wasting illness upon the victim, something that can even afflict supernatural beings, though Kindred and Prometheans are unaffected. Sufferers of this illness will sometimes themselves transform into Penanggalan. Curing the disease requires killing the creature and feeding part of its liver to the victim. Destroying a penanggal requires one of a few things: fire; the sun, should the creature not be in the safety of its body; or stuffing the body with sharp objects while the penanggal is out hunting.

Penanggalan have access to Mengilai, a power taking the form of a scream with varying effects. Kindred cannot learn this power.
