Valerianus

Valerianus was a Roman Ventrue who ruled as Prince of Vienna in the Middle Ages.

History

Little is known about his life before the Embrace. Valerianus was involved in the destruction of Carthage, and served as a member of the Eternal Senate.[1] In 50 CE, he oversaw the Roman fortification at Vindobona which would one day grow into the city of Vienna. During this period, he tangled with the Tzimisce Yorska, thwarting an attack by a tribe called the Markomans.[2]

In 213, Valerianus left Vindobona to lobby in Rome for the settlement to receive city status. He left his childer in charge of the domain in his absence. A group of Nosferatu lead by the Pawnbroker infiltrated the city and killed Valerianus' brood.[2] Valerianus returned in the early eleventh century and allied himself with Etrius to regain control of Vienna, and in exchange he supported the nascent Tremere Clan.[2]

By one account, Valerianus was assassinated by the Tzimisce for his support of the Usurpers. By another account, he simply vanished, and may have joined the ranks of the Inconnu.[2]

Timeline Retcon

Both Encyclopedia Vampirica and Dark Ages: Europe put Valerianus' encounter with Etrius as coming when the latter was "recently Embraced," so some time after 1022. The former book and Wiener Blut: Wien bei Nacht state that Lotharius took power in Vienna in 1351,[3] while the latter states that Valerianus was killed in 1155.
