Gender

Latreille published the name with no originally included species and no etymology. The ending "-pales" is a masculine noun if transliterated from the Greek "πάλης", and an adjective (either M or F) if from the Greek "παλής". In the absence of explicit etymology, it could be either gender, in which case the application of ICZN Article 30.1.4.2 also renders it masculine by default; even if had been intended as an adjective, in order for Ceropales to be feminine, it would have required Latreille to include feminine species names in 1796, and he did not. Subsequent inclusion of feminine epithets are irrelevant when determining gender under the ICZN. Note also that a few authors, such as Arnold in 1937, correctly treated the genus as masculine, but these corrections were ignored by other authors.
