Etymology

From Byzantine Greek σφυρίζω (sphurízō) from the Ancient Greek σῡρίζω (sūrízō, play the syrinx; make a whistling sound). The development of the [f],[1] possibly under the influence of the Hellenistic σφῠρίον (sphuríon, mallet).[2]
