From Classical Mongolian ᠲᠠᠬᠢᠶᠠ (takiy-a), from Middle Mongol ᠲᠠᠬᠢᠶᠠ (takiy-a), from Proto-Mongolic *takïxa, probably a loan from Proto-Turkic *tiakïgu or otherwise related. Compare Proto-Tungusic *tiake (“hen”) and Manchu ᠴᠣᡴᠣ (coko, “chicken”). Cognate with Buryat тахяа (taxjaa), Kalmyk така (taka), Dongxiang tegha, Khitan 𘰺𘯛𘯺 (*t qo a).
