Etymology

Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Ancient Greek ἅπαξ (hápax, once, one time, only once). Folk etymology explains this as a contraction of ܐܵܦ ܚܲܕ݇ ܙܲܘܓܵܐ (āp ḥa zawgā, literally not even a pair).
