Etymology 1
From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *gliŋ (“ground, land, island”); cognate with the first syllable of Jingpho [script needed] (kriŋ-muŋ, “hill”) (STEDT). Luce 1981 also adduces Old Chinese 堅 (OC *kiːn, “hard, firm”) as a potential cognate.
