From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *gliŋ (ground, land, island); cognate with the first syllable of Jingpho [script needed] (kriŋ-muŋ, hill) (STEDT). Luce 1981 also adduces Old Chinese (OC *kiːn, “hard, firm”) as a potential cognate.
