Etymology 1
Apparently from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan *k/ʔ-r(ə/a)w (“to fry, roast, cook”) (STEDT #5862, though none of its reflexes have been hyperlinked to it within the STEDT database). Compare Old Chinese 烄 (OC *keːws, *kreːwʔ, “to burn (on a pyre)”), 燎 (OC *rew, *rewʔ, *rews, “to hunt at night with torches, burn, make burnt offering”). Despite superficial similarity, apparently unrelated to 炒 (OC *sʰroːʔ, “to stir-fry”).
