From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *p-(r/j)an (to spread (wide), stretch out), whence Jingpho [script needed] (phran, to grow, unfold and flatten (as a leaf)), Old Chinese (OC *peːns, “to be spread out; all around, universally”) (STEDT).
