From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *p-(r/j)an (“to spread (wide), stretch out”), whence Jingpho [script needed] (phran, “to grow, unfold and flatten (as a leaf)”), Old Chinese 遍 (OC *peːns, “to be spread out; all around, universally”) (STEDT).
