Burmese

Etymology

From အ- (a.-, nominal prefix) +‎ ကြေး (kre:, skin, scales), the latter "skin" element only surviving in this term. STEDT derives the second syllable from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *m-k-rəj¹ (skin, outer covering), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s-k-rəj (skin), whence also Tibetan སྐྱི (skyi, outer skin), and perhaps archaic Old Chinese (OC *kreːds, “scale (of animals); shell”). Note, however, much stronger phonetic correspondence with (OC *kril, “muscle; skin”), particularly with the Baxter-Sagart reconstruction.
