Etymology
Phrase composed of 匙 (saji, “spoon”, more specifically, for administering medicine) + を (o, object particle) + 投げる (nageru, “to throw”): "to throw a spoon". An expression of defeat, throwing away the medicine spoon because the disease has proven too strong.[1][2]
