Etymology

First attested in c. 353, in The Preface to the Poems of the Orchid Pavilion by Wang Xizhi:

暮春會稽山陰蘭亭,脩稧羣賢畢至 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
暮春会稽山阴兰亭修禊群贤毕至 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
From: c. 353, 王羲之, 蘭亭集序
Mùchūn zhī chū, huì yú Kuàijī shānyīn zhī Lántíng, xiūxì shì yě. Qúnxián bì zhì, shào zhǎng xián jí. [Pinyin]
At the beginning of late spring, we meet at Orchid Pavilion to the northern side of Mount Kuaiji for washing off ill luck. All the virtuous come to meet here, the youthful as well as the elderly.
