Etymology
First attested in c. 353, in The Preface to the Poems of the Orchid Pavilion by Wang Xizhi:
- 暮春之初,會于會稽山陰之蘭亭,脩稧事也。羣賢畢至,少長咸集。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: c. 353, 王羲之, 《蘭亭集序》
- Mùchūn zhī chū, huì yú Kuàijī shānyīn zhī Lántíng, xiūxì shì yě. Qúnxián bì zhì, shào zhǎng xián jí. [Pinyin]
- At the beginning of late spring, we meet at Orchid Pavilion to the northern side of Mount Kuaiji for washing off ill luck. All the virtuous come to meet here, the youthful as well as the elderly.
