Etymology

From Proto-Athabaskan *qʼutšʼ (“to be sour, rancid”).

In Northern Athabaskan languages, the stem Proto-Athabaskan *qʼəž, with the same meaning, is derived from Proto-Athabaskan *qʼəš (“alder”), whence Navajo kʼish (“alder”).
